Where do the most oil plants grow?

cold country or hot country or latin country .Where do the most oil plants grow?
Saudi Arabia

Dennis GWhere do the most oil plants grow?
I'm not sure what you mean by ';oil plants';. If you are talking about plants that are used to make ethanol then warm climate is preferred. Warm climate is better for plants like sugar cane which yield the highest amount of energy. If you talking about oils in plants in general, then all climates. All plats have some oils in them. Peanuts and soy are very common oils used in cooking that come from plants and grow in various climates. Many other plants also produce oils from every climate on earth.
The oil plant is an aggressive, invasive, vine-like plant that grows throughout Latin America. The flowers are sponge like spheres which, when squeezed, secrete crude oil. The term oil wells stems from the fact that the plants prefer dark, humid abandoned wells, where they can thrive. They are harvested by enslaved chinchillas native to the area, then stolen and shipped to oil refineries around the world.

  • What are the ways to improve heat rate of an oil fired power plant?

How can we improve heat rate of a regenerative reheat oil fired power plant? like variable speed drives....etc etcWhat are the ways to improve heat rate of an oil fired power plant?
What type of oil fired plant are you refering to steam boiler/turbine or combustion turbine used in either the simple cycle or combined cycle mode. For a steam cycle, and without considering the practicality, one can add feedwater heaters, replace the turbine or install more efficient internals, increase steam pressure/temperature, better burners, more efficient motors, install variable speed drives on the bigger fan (forced draft, induced draft) motors, better insulation.

Not sure how to do this.

1--Jatropha curcus is a drought-resistant perennial, growing well in marginal/poor soil.

2--It is a small tree or shrub with smooth gray bark, which exudes a whitish colored, watery, latex when cut.

3--Its water requirement is extremely low and it can stand long periods of drought by shedding most of its leaves to reduce transpiration loss.

4--Early growth is fast and with good rainfall conditions nursery plants may bear fruits after the first rainy season, direct sown plants after the second rainy season

5--Medically it is used for diseases like cancer, piles, snakebite, paralysis, dropsy etc.

How can i extract the oil from a patchouli plant?

    Method of Extraction

This oil is extracted from the young leaves that are dried and fermented prior to steam distillation. This type of distillation is very effective, not expensive and provides with the best essential oil qualities.

Patchouli oil improves with age and gives a fuller odor.

There are many methods of extracting essential oils and it depending on the source from where the oil is extracted. Here we will see how clove oil extracted. This oil is extracted from the leaves, stem and buds via steam distillation, yet it is only the clove bud oil which is used in aromatherapy, since it contains the least Eugenol.

Steam distillation is very simple and cost effective method of extracting essential oils. Lets see how it works, when hot steam is forced in through the plant material, it forces and opens the pores where the oil resides. Now we got the steam, which contains essential oil, this potion is now passed through cooling system to condense the steam, which then forms a liquid from which essential oil and water is separated.

One thing has to be taken care, the temperature, should be just suitable to allow the essential oil flow through plant material. However, if the temperature is high it can burn of the essential oil.

Some oils are very heat sensitive and this method is good for these oils, which protects there healing qualities.

    Precautions

The oil is non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing but the smell of Patchouli oil may be a little persistent for some people and it may cause loss of appetite in some individuals.

A few drops may seem very little but all oils are extremely potent and concentrated. Using more than the recommended amount may result in an adverse response, e.g. too much relaxant may produce irritation and anxiety.

Why is oil only found in the seed of a plant?

Why is it only found there and no where else? Why is oil only found in the seed of a plant?
Who said the oils are present only in seed?

You never play with orange skin peel? If you press it, oils will come out. If you press it in front of a spirit lamp, you can see the flame from the oil.

Citrus leaves have many volatile oils.

Eucalyptus barks are used to extract oils.

    Note:

Oil is a storage product of plants. Like other storage products such as carbohydrates and proteins, oils are also generally stored in seeds. However, it does not mean that oils are only stored in seeds.

Can one get the essential oil from a plant at home without any harmful chemicals?
Yes from some of the plant materials in small quantities.

I am not able to guess in which part of the globe you are and what plant materials are around you and in your kitchen which are capable of giving essential oil readily.

Steam distillation is the most common procedure. At home without any special equipment you may be able to get some oil from rose petals (do not use hybrid varieties), cloves, fennel seeds, sweet lime (use peels), eculyptus leaves, ginger, etc. DONOT CARRY ON WITHOUT SUPEVISION OF AN EXPERT.

Take any of the above. If it is solid then powder it, if it is wet then grind it to make paste or gring it in a grinder. Add 3 to 4 times water. Put it in pressure cooker. Do not put ant weight on the cooker. Attach a rubber pipe to the steam outlet. Pu the other end of pipe in a bottle. Heat to boil and let the condense steam into bottle. The water in bottle will contain essential oil. Oil will separate out if content is faorly high otherwise it will remain dissolved in water. But you will be able to smell it and appriciate the smell.

Some part of the rubber pipe can be replaced by metal pipe to make cooling more effective.

Several crude innovative devices can be tried.

    By Cold pressing:

From orange peels, jasmine flowers, mint leaves, lemon leaves, lemon peels the following method can be tried.

Take a few filter paper ( or pices of newspaper/ butter paper / fine cloth).

Keep two / three papers one over another then spread small quantity of the above material, then place more papers over it. Press again and again with a roller pin a few times. Remove paper one by one. Some of the papers will have some oil enough to be able to smell the oil.

Why are plant oils considered to be healthier than animal fats and solid shortening?

unsaturated fats are generally liquid at room temperature and saturated fats are solid. saturated fats increase cholesterol more than unsaturated ones.

White oil is best for blackspot %26amp; other such diseases. I spray aphids with a little fly spray. I use the one made from those S.African flowers, can't think of it's name(starts with P)
Neem oil has been found very effective against certain types of insects. These are Aphids (plant lice).caterpillars (larva) of leaf eating type and jassids (plant hoppers) but not very effective against scales and mites.

To use neem oil, take fresh oil about 50 ml,mix in 500 ml water and spray thoroughly on whole plant, top and underside of leaves and branches (bracts) of rose plant. The oil should be fresh as far as possible.

Neem oil is very safe and eco-friendly for people without any toxic residue. Go ahread and use it. Good luck.

Is there a difference between plant oil and plant extract? If so, please explain. Thanks?

A plant extract is a somewhat more general term, in that it can include substances that are not oils. Some plant constituents are water soluble. The substances in the extract will depend on the type of extractant that is used.

Plant oils can be extracted with organic extractants, like alcohols, etc. They can also be extracted by cold pressing, which squeezes out all liquids from the plant, and then the oils are separated later (sometimes by allowing the liquid mixture to just settle).

I bought a house 6 months ago in houston.was digging to plant roses today, and came across a lot of used oil.?

Hold on a minute, this could be residual from a toxic dumping years ago and not done by the previous owner. Call the city or county and have the state test it via their Environmental agency. There is a Superfund with some monies available to remove such waste in sites.

Don't ignore it get some professional help--include your state agencies.I bought a house 6 months ago in houston.was digging to plant roses today, and came across a lot of used oil.?
Yes, the previous owners could be held responsible, if they put the oil there or knew about the oil and did nothing. You should definatly contact an attorney right away. The sooner the better.

You also will need to clean it up as soon as possible, because for one it could be somehting much more toxic than oil, and if it is oil it can do considerable harm to your surrounding environmet, pets, or kids if it's not disposed of properly.

Many States have programs to help homeowners pay for the cleanup of such sites. That's another reason to contact a lawyer. It could save you thousands of dollars and stress in the future.

Just what ever you do, don't wait. Do something as soon as you can.
I would research your situation before you act. If you tell the EPA or similar authority that you have hazardous material on your property and you can't prove that the previous owner is responsible then YOU are responsible for the clean-up which can be quite expensive and they may have the power to force you. Talk to a lawyer.
you should talk to an attorney and see if he is not responsible for damages. i know here in tn you would have to take care of it if you hid something like that in a house you sold.
I would think the old owner should be accountable. I would see a lawyer.
get an attorney and call the E.P.A.
I remember seeing this on TV somewhere....

... And then they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverely,...

    ...Hills that is..

Or you could call a lawyer. You may not want to call the EPA until you know if you have another place to stay first.

Why do most fast food restaurants use lard instead of plant oils in their deep friers?

They don't. They use vegetable (usually peanut) oil and have for years (in some cases ';decades';).

Name a fast food chain that uses lard. Oh, and prove it.Why do most fast food restaurants use lard instead of plant oils in their deep friers?
In most restaurants they would rather use beef shortening than vegetable oil because of the flavoring.

Typically beef shortening has more flavor and gives things like fries a better taste. But because of the implications of trans-fats and religious issues plenty of restaurants are beginning to make the switch to vegetable shortening.

All McDonald's restaurants in Canada now fry all products in 100% transfat free 100% vegetable shortening. It has been a harder switch in the States because of the problem with the taste. Why do most fast food restaurants use lard instead of plant oils in their deep friers?
Lard is cheaper to use and easier to reuse/store. Too much will cause a build up in your arteries and veins.

Just look at it. You can look at butter the same way. Melt either and put it in the refridgerator to cool. The same thing happens in your body.
It is cheaper than plant oils. And no they don't care about long term health effects it has on consumers, all they care about is the amount of money they are making.
its cheaper to use and buy than vegetable or olive oil. Thats what they make soft serve cones out of aswell

I'm not sure the plant would work...it's fragrance isn't as strong as the peppermint oil and it is the smell that the rats don't like. Instead of making an oil/water spray you could try just putting the peppermint oil on cotton balls and placing them were the rats are (around garbage cans or any openings into your home). The pepermint oil on the cotton balls would have the strongest smell and should keep the critters away. I believe ';watering'; a plant with oil would eventually kill it. I may be mistaken, but the oil would most likely not feed the plant moisture, but clog up its ability to gain moisture or even the air/carbon dioxide it needs.Does oil affect plant growth?
oil will perfectly kill the plant.in most countries oils with sulpher are used as weedicides.this block the uptake of water and blocks the cell membrane pores.so the plants usualy cannot grow in areas where soil contiminated with oil.
Oil will definitely kill a plant. After all, a lot of herbicides are based on or use oil derivatives.

Why would a plant die if it were given oil, instead of water?

i know because oil isnt water but why would it?Why would a plant die if it were given oil, instead of water?
Fat, oil, and grease (FOG) have a high C/N ratio (90:1) If they are applied to agricultural soils, they affect the availability of N to crops. N is immobilized during the FOG's decomposition. The same will happen in a compost pile without an external nitrogen source. FOG will slow the compost reaction if it is added in high concentration or greater than 1% of mass. N availability is a limiting factor forsoil microorganisms responsible for decomposition of organic materials. As the soil N is tied up in decomposition the plants are starved.

The problem is direct coating (oiling) of wildlife or plants with the spilled oil product. Vegetable oils, animal fats, and petroleum oils can cause effects, such as coating, and oxygen depletion. Oils can coat the roots or the leaves to stop gas exchanges and block the uptake of nutrients. Only applied at the correct levels can they be used as horticultural sprays to control insects or fungi.

Oil coatings from marine spills are less detrimental to plants than the chemical dispersants. ';Howard et al. (1989) concluded that if oil cannot be prevented from covering eelgrass beds, then dispersant treatments must be avoided in order to minimize the risk of a partly dispersed oil mixture affecting the eelgrass. It was advised that oil coverage on eelgrass beds should be left untreated, and the oil layer allowed to disperse by tidal action.'; Dispersant cause the oil to penetrate the soil effecting the nitrogen cycle. Heavy petroleum oils have little penetration of substrate, but can be highly adhesive.

    in the unoiled control treatment. ... Additional support exists for the contention that weathered oil is at least as toxic to plants as fresh oil. Weathered oil was found to be more toxic to kelp than fresh oil.';

Weathering is physical, chemical, and biological processes that begin to transform the discharged oil. Penetration of oil into marsh vegetation may depend on oil viscosity; weathered oils penetrate less than fresh oil. Weathered oil is composed of relatively insoluble compounds, and often coalesces into mats or tarballs. Why would a plant die if it were given oil, instead of water?
you answered your own question. plants need water for photosynthesis. If you want to beat the bush with oil, then say what kind of oil. vegetable oil? motor oil? synthetic oil? whale oil?

Oil could be partially absorbed however, the oil would dehydrate and possibly ';cook'; the plant due to the heat transferance from the suns rays.
Of course plants need water to absorb nutrients and to perform photosynthesis. The same nutrients could be added to oil; the reason the plant will die if given oil, even nutrient rich oil, is that plant cells absorb the nutrients through the semi-permeable membranes in their cells. Oil cannot be absorbed through these membranes.
Because the plant can't get the thick oil into its roots. Water is thinner.
    How about if you ask, ';if not given water, would a plant die?';

Because even if you are giving it oil, you are not giving it water.

    Dehydration is the answer.
Water is essential in all living cells as a means of transportation and other things. Oil does not have the same chemical properties as water. Hydrogen bonding is essential in the process called transpiration which is basically how a plant breathes. lots of other stuff too take some bio courses if you are interested.
in its properties oil differs a lot from water. water is a very essential chemical for carrying out the basic metabolic activities. also oil will be unable to dissolve the various minerals needed by the plant

Oil is a fossil fuel. How come the areas where there are fossil fuels there is very little plant life now?

It just seems ironic that everywhere that I know there is oil that there is a desolate area above. Even in the ocean which is really desolate too.Oil is a fossil fuel. How come the areas where there are fossil fuels there is very little plant life now?
It is a good question with a complex answer. The earths surface has been in a state of constant change since the days of creation. Most of the oil deposits are from plants that were growing on the earth millions of years ago. They are now transformed through pressure and heat into the black crude that we call oil. Believe me, those areas where the oil is situated were once lush, green garden paradises. What ever caused the the earth's surface to drop and bury that vegetation was a cataclysmic event. This brief sketch barely touches the surface of the question you asked. I hope you will continue with what you have just learned and consider the ramifications concerning the need for alternatives to fossil fuels.Oil is a fossil fuel. How come the areas where there are fossil fuels there is very little plant life now?
    Venezuela and Pennsylvania are counterexamples

    to your theory, sorry.
maybe because the stuffs made from dead things?
I don't think your assumption is correct. Some of the greatest petroleum reserves are under extensively agriable terrain such as the North Slope Tundra areas; the SouthAmerican jungle areas; The great Smokie Mountains; The Michigan Penninsulas; Under the Continental shelf i.e. the ocean; etc.

Its just easier to find and recover from the barren areas because there is not so much in the way of getting to it along with the single most important complication that many people live in the non-barren areas.

Will a plant grow when watered with vegetable oil and water mixed together?

It depends on how much oil it used.

If it's just a little bit of oil with a lot of water, it's OK. The tiny bits of oil drops will be plant food later. If there is too much oil, like a quart oil with a quart of water, it'll give the roots a hard time.

Here is the chemistry/microbiology involved in the process. Vegetable oil needs to be decomposed into smaller substances for the plant to absorb as nutrients. The micro-organisms in the soil will do the job for you. However, in this process, they(bacteria, etc) need oxygen to live and to work. If too much oil is dumped in the soil at once, the soil micro-organisms will have a splurge of grow and choke up the plant roots by using up all the oxygen. They also produce heat in the process and it can hurt the roots, too.

The same concept is behind composing. People put coffee grounds or clipped grass or animal manure in mounds to make compost. They don't apply these directly to soil. The material needs to stay in the pile for days, sometimes weeks to let the microorganisms do their job. Then the compost would be transformed into stuffs that contains more nutrients which are available for plants.

What plant would be good for phytoremediation on a large motor oil spill on my lawn?

i also need to know how to dispose of the plant after use? What plant would be good for phytoremediation on a large motor oil spill on my lawn?
I know willows are being used for this purpose, I think it takes several years to completely clean the soil but the state is using this method on a toxic spill in our area. Oil will also evaporate if the soil is dug up, and spread out in a 6'; thick layer, according to a friend that used to work detoxifying old gas stations.

  • If you fed a normal house plant with extra virgin olive oil, what effect would it have on growth?

I am performing an experiment and am trying to form a hypothesisIf you fed a normal house plant with extra virgin olive oil, what effect would it have on growth?
I did this experiment once. The plants treated with oil do not do well. My hypothesis is that the oil makes it difficult for the soil to dry and the roots to get access to air. It probably promotes mold growth and other undesirable conditions. If you fed a normal house plant with extra virgin olive oil, what effect would it have on growth?
Well, you could hypothesize that it will either die because the lipids would clog up the xylem (but that makes no sense, really); or you could just say that nothing would happen because only water with its dissolved nutrients gets absorbed, and since water and oil don't mix, the olive oil wouldn't get absorbed at all by the roots. It would probably just coat the surface of the soil, making it hard for water to seep through to the roots, in which case the plant would wither and die.

I have a 5'x2' bed I want to plant beans in, but someone poured automotive oil in it. What should I do?

The previouse resident poured like a gallon of wast automotive oil in my raised 5'x2' planting bed about two months ago. I don't see any residue. Should I do anything to the soil before I plant string beans in it?I have a 5'x2' bed I want to plant beans in, but someone poured automotive oil in it. What should I do?
Yeah, I highly suggest you dump out the all potting soil, as it is now consider toxic waste. Especially since you don't know how the person poured the oil, you should get rid of the soil at least two feet deep and all the surrounding soil. I am assuming you will consume the beans that you grow?? Unless its just flowers or something like that, its a risk if you get poisoned from this... Are you willing to end up in the hospital or get cancer in the long-run from somthing so preventable? Automotive oil is carcinogenic. Is there another plot you can plant your beans maybe? Hope this helps.I have a 5'x2' bed I want to plant beans in, but someone poured automotive oil in it. What should I do?
First I would find out how far has it spread if possible. Luckily for oil is a pretty slow moving product, but still the sooner its corrected the less it has spread. Because, I wouldnt consider in place cleaning cause of the high costs. I'd just dig out the oily dirt, have it properly disposed of (kinda costly), or mix it in a moveable pot (wouldnt put it somewhere else in the ground thats contaminating 2 places) that wont overflow, with plenty of topsoils and stuff and plant some non edible, robust plants. Plants and bugs that live with them naturally sometimes absorb the oil (very slowly but surely), but they wont be edible.

I'd make sure that there is no free product (oil) in the bean garden, but its probably too hard to clean, Id just remove and replace it.

Im by no means an expert or qualified to give an expert opinion, thats just what I would do....

What would happen to a plant if its leaves were completely coated with petroleum jelly or oil? What would happen to a plant if its leaves were completely coated with petroleum jelly or oil?
They could not breathe in that CO2 could not enter the stomates of the leaves and O2 could not leave. This would result in the plant's death because it could not carry out photosynthesis. What would happen to a plant if its leaves were completely coated with petroleum jelly or oil?
Complete coverage would seal off the stomates on the bottom of the leaf preventing gas exchange so the leaf would eventually wilt and die.

Famous Canola Oil is supposed to be made from genetically modified Rapeseed Plant which is not good to eat?

If you know more about this, could you please explain if Canola Oil could be potentially bad for your health as claimed in some writings ? 'Canola' is supposed to come from 'Canada oil' and apparently there is no plant called the Canola plant ? Please enlighten. ThanksFamous Canola Oil is supposed to be made from genetically modified Rapeseed Plant which is not good to eat?
As you mentioned, Canola Oil is really Rapeseed Oil that has been genetically modified. And likewise as you mentioned, Canola's name comes from Canada - the location where it was first developed.

Now is it healthy for you? First off, Canola Oil has a VERY good PR department, and I've found out that Canada a number of decades ago, paid our FDA some $50,000,000 to market their GM oil in the US!!! Oh that wonderful money hungry FDA of ours! Few poeple, especially Americans who use it for just about ALL their cooking needs, know that it is genetically modified. This was done to make it more palitable in the human body(digestable).

You see, the reason geneticists changed Rapeseed Oil was that Rapeseed Oil is about 50% erucic acid. Erucic acid as been shown to cause dwarfism or stunted growth in humans! When geneticists bred the Canola Oil variant, they removed its erucic acid component, to remove that risk. In fact the official definition of Canola Oil at the Canola Council Website is ';an oil that must contain less than 2% erucic acid';.

Those who manufacture Canola Oil are the first ob course to praise its health benefits. But in reality, it only has 10% Omega-3. In comparison, Flax Seed Oil has 58% Omega-3 plus Omega-6 as well. Omega-3 oils MUST be served cold in order to preserve their health benefits. But most people use Canola Oil to cook with, immediately destroying its health benefits.

But is Canola oil safe to consume? Since Canola Oil has a smoke point of 475F cooks in restaurants love to use it for deep frying. In that regard,it is very safe. And granted, compared to other partially hydrogenated oils like soybean oil that turn into toxic Trans Fatty Acids when they are heated, Canola Oil is better on the ';scale of dangers';!

But it DOES create some Trans Fatty Acids, just like rapeseed oil does. It produces slightly FEWER Trans Fatty Acids than rapeseed oil does, but not by much.

In a study by the Cooperative Extension of the University of California, which compared canola and rapeseed oil vs soybean oil and peanut oil, the peanut oil did the best at high temperatures at remaining healthy.

So if you use Canola Oil cold - you get 10% Omega-3 oils. Not as good as the Flaxseed Oil benefits, but maybe you can't find flaxseed oil at your local store. If you want to start cooking with oil, it's better to turn to peanut oil instead.

Note that even if YOU do not heat your Canola Oil, the manufacturer might have. Be sure to buy Canola Oils that are listed as being ';cold pressed';. Otherwise, if the manufacturer heated up the oil over 110F in their processing, they have already damaged any omega oils that were in the original oil.

    Canola Oil has a shelf life of 1 year. According to the Canola website, ';Keep your canola oil in the fridge or in a cool, dark place when you are not using it. Light and heat speed up the degeneration process in oils.';

Personally, I never use it or consume foods that were made in it, for Rape Seed is a very poisonous plant to begin with, and any genetically modified product can't be trusted as being 100% safe!!!Famous Canola Oil is supposed to be made from genetically modified Rapeseed Plant which is not good to eat?
What you have said is the truth. Canola is a form of rapeseed, but who would buy something with that name on it, especially when the real plant is toxic?

It is supposed to be ok for you, but personally I stick with olive oil, which IS good for you, and for recipes where you don't want the olive oil taste use sesame oil or peanut oil or walnut oil.

I don't use canola because my fiance is very allergic to it and will throw up if he gets say popcorn at a theatre made with canola, so we go to the theatre chain that uses palm oil and coconut oil.

My kids are allergic to soy so that is out too for us, plus most soy is also genetically modified and susicipious.
You're correct, ';canola'; is actually ';canada oil'; and is in fact made from seed of a genetically modified weed. I *think* it's rapeseed, but I'm not positive on that.

Among other things, the plant was modified so that it could not reproduce on its own. I can't remember what the exact mechanism was, but the plant found a way around it and started breeding on farms, and invading the surrounding areas producing hybrids and outcompeting the wild strains. The company that produced the seed originally tried to program the plants to stop their breeding mechanism mainly to make more money. If the farmers couldn't pollinate the plants themselves, they can't get seeds, and they'd have to continuously buy seeds from the company.

The reason for the controversy is that the plants found a way to ';de-program'; (yes, I know, not a word) what the researchers did to them, and if the researchers overlooked this, then what else did they overlook in regards to their research.

As far as whether it's good to eat or not...depends on what your view on GE foods are.
    1. Majority of canola crop not all crop, is genetically modified in Canada.

    2. These are genetically modified to resist particular herbicide, like glyphosate (Roundup).

    3. Except this character the variety is same as the original non-transgenic canola.

    4. Hence, it does not pose any harm to consumers' health.

    5. However, it may pose problem to environment by growing volunteerly in unwanted places, because herbicide cannot kill it. And it may pass on its herbicide resistant genes to its wild relatives which will make them also resistant to herbicides.

Otherwise, it is safe to eat genetically modified rapeseed oil.

Effect of Oil Spills on Underwater Plant Growth and Photosynthetic Rate?

Yep...it's that dreaded time of year again. Science fair. I'm looking to do ';Effect of Oil Spills on Underwater Plant Growth and Photosynthetic Rate';. I'm planning to put each plant in a water-filled test tube. My control group will have no oil in the water, and my other group will have a certain amount of oil in the water.

    1. How do I measure photosynthetic rate of the plants? What are the variables in this project? Is it the type of oil?

    2. And what else can I measure besides mass and photosynthetic rate?

    3. What plant should I use???

Thanks so much!!Effect of Oil Spills on Underwater Plant Growth and Photosynthetic Rate?
Elodea is a good standby for test involving aquatic plants. It grows fast, is readily available, and is nearly impossible to kill. (You can get it at any local pet store...it grow in long ';vines'; with leaves all around it).

To measure photosynthetic rate, you could put an inverted, water filled tube (called a Durham tube) above the plant. As the plant produces oxygen from photosynthesis, a bubble will appear in the tube. Another method is to use a pH indicator like bromothymol blue, though this is also sensitive to respiration.

You could also use a Winkler kit to test for dissolved oxygen - remember the oil is probably going to change the rate at which gases can dissolve into the water in your tubes. Make sure you dry your plant completely before weighing it, and try to make the mass of the plant going into the tubes as close as possible.

    Your variable here should be ';Elodea with Oil'; and ';Elodea without Oil.';

Remember that your control is the ';without oil.'; Addition of the oil is your independent variable, and photosynthesis rate (observed by gas production) is your dependent variable.

I hope this helps. If you can get your hands on clear glass funnels that are large enough to turn upside down and put your plants in, you could put them in small fish bowls, and cover the tip of the funnel with an empty water balloon (or any small balloon) and use that as a measure of gas production - that would be easier than using a Durham tube, but you'd need a larger setup than test tubes. Good luck! Let me know how it turns out or if you have any more questions.

How do you extract oil from a seed or from a plant?

We have to conduct research studies in school and I want to work with oil extraction (possibly from seeds). I read about a process called ';pressing';(in seeds) but didn't quite understood how it is done.

Can you also suggest possible sources of oil? I know nuts are good sources...

Please help. Thank you very much! ^_^How do you extract oil from a seed or from a plant?
for oil from plants, I'd not reinvent the wheel, you are right nuts are a plentiful source... as in palm, coconut and large exotic nuts of mid-America.

pressing is as it sounds pressing the nuts as in squeeze, another is centrifugal force spinning the nuts under pressure, still another involves heating the nuts... while all of these methods may work however one must factor in the amount of energy used to extract the oil... is it cost effective, in that you might consider using solar, wind, Geo,wave energy to reduce cost.

hope this helped, you may consider contacting BP/Shell company's and talk with them , they give you info and a good direction for your research. How do you extract oil from a seed or from a plant?
Pressing is literally that. A hydraulic press expresses the fluid from the solid or you run the meal through two robust touching hard rollers - meal goes through, oil stays behind.

The other route is extraction. Grind up the source, extract with organic solvent, evaporate the solvent. Liquid carbon dioxide is also used, and supercritical CO2.

How will you control oxidation of unsaturated oils? Separate oil from water? Remove toxic principles (e.g., soybean inosinates).

    edible oil extraction 825,00 hits

Wow, there is a lot of mis-information on Bio-diesel on this website, you CANNOT run straight bio diesel in any car without conversion, bio-diesel is acidic, it will disolve any organic materials this means Rubber!!! your hoses are Rubber! there are two options here, bio-diesel, or vegetable oil, there are up and downsides to both, bio diesel on a polo is quite a simple conversion, since there are no organic internal gaskets on that motor, all you need to do is replace your hoses with viton or tygothane, there are many links for this at www.biodieselnow.org as for vegetable oil, by far the best kit on the market is the kit by www.greasecar.com the advantage of this is you do not need to make your bio diesel or buy it wholesale(yes there are many places to buy it, you do not have to ';make it in your garage';), you can just put in Filtered straight vegetable oil. the downside to this is that the car cannot start from cold on vegetable oil, so you have a separate fuel tank for the oil, and you have to remember to flush out the fuel lines EVERY time you shut off the car, or it will not start again

Where in the plant will oil be found?

    Depends on the plant.

Many plants have the ';essential'; oils within the leaves and some within the bark. There are many ways of extracting that oil. Steam, solvent, pressing, grinding.

To find the way to get the oil of your type of plant, research that plant.Where in the plant will oil be found?
the oil is generally derived from the leaves although it can be from the stem

sometimesthough it is from the fruit.

So I guess the answer is that it comes from any part and depends on the plantWhere in the plant will oil be found?
Very Very deep in the ground-LOL!! That's why they have oil rigs that drill in the earth for miles in search of oil!!
For the oil that is often used for cooking, it is extracted from the seeds. Prime examples are sunflower oil and rape seed oil.The seeds are ground up and pressed to produce the oil.

Oil can also come from the leaves and flowers ,which are then distilled, for aromatherapy oils and essential oils, which are used in cosmetics, soaps etc. Examples of these are lavender and violets
question makes no sence what so ever
Often its in the fruit. For example an olive tree

? little woodlice. That sounds like it might be woolly aphis which is quite common on house plants. Are there little blobs of a white woolly substance as well? They can be easily wiped off or dabbed with a cotton bud soaked in methylated spirit. They tend to be persistent so keep a close watch for a couple of weeks after you think you have got rid of the last one!
Spray it with an insecticide is best but you can also use powder form insecticides too for dusting around the roots. Personally I would do both; re-pot it with new compost and dust this with anti-ant and beetle powder, then spray the leaves with suitable insecticide

Only one of them is the correct answer and i dont know which oneHow do you extract the vegetable oil,the fruits or seeds of plant?
    Crushing would be my answer.

Plastic is made using crude oil can plant oils be used instead?

    not really.

the fact that in english for both things the same word is used does not mean that they have the same chemical structure.

crude oil is petrol-it contains hydrocarbons, the unsaturated of which (natural, or synthetic) can be polymerized to form polymers, or plastics.

plant oil, or fat are not hydrocarbons, they are esters. and although part of them are partially unsaturated, making polymerization theoretically possible, it is quite a mess.Plastic is made using crude oil can plant oils be used instead?
As well as trying to use plant oils as fuel they are trying to get them to be used for plastics as well. As you may know they are slowing advacing in the use of plant oils as fuel, which is very similar to its application in plastics, the demand for an alternative more inexpansive fuel over shadows the research on plant oils being used for plastic production. Plant oils can be used in plastics but the process is much more expensive so at the moment it is less effecient to use plant oils but it is possible.Plastic is made using crude oil can plant oils be used instead?
no. plant oils contain only short molecules where crude oil consists of very long strands similar molecules.

  • How can I extract the oil of the plant?

So you want to make an essential oil so to speak? Well, it is a complicated process, but here it is....

There are several ways of doing this: Steam Distillation, maceration, cold pressing, solvent extraction, etc. You can pick which works best for your needs. Good luck!

Essential oils can be extracted using a variety of methods, although some are not commonly used today. Currently, the most popular method for extraction is steam distillation, but as technological advances are made more efficient and economical methods being developed.

    Steam Distillation:

To extract the essential oil, the plant material is placed into a still (very similar to a pressure cooker) where pressurized steam passes through the plant material.

The heat from the steam causes globules of oil in the plant to burst and the oil then evaporates. The essential oil vapor and the steam then pass out the top of the still into a water cooled pipe where the vapors are condensed back to liquids. At this point, the essential oil separates from the water and floats to the top.

Now, this doesn't sound like a particularly complicated process but did you know that it takes more than 8 million Jasmine flowers to produce just 2 pounds of jasmine oil? No wonder pure essential oils are expensive!

    Maceration:

Maceration actually creates more of an ';infused oil'; rather than an ';essential oil';. The plant matter is soaked in vegetable oil, heated and strained at which point it can be used for massage.

    Cold Pressing:

Cold pressing is used to extract the essential oils from citrus rinds such as orange, lemon, grapefruit and bergamot. The rinds are separated from the fruit, are ground or chopped and are then pressed. The result is a watery mixture of essential oil and liquid which will separate given time.

It is important to note that oils extracted using this method have a relatively short shelf life, so make or purchase only what you will be using within the next six months.

    Solvent Extraction:

A hydrocarbon solvent is added to the plant material to help dissolve the essential oil. When the solution is filtered and concentrated by distillation, a substance containing resin (resinoid), or a combination of wax and essential oil (known as concrete) remains.

From the concentrate, pure alcohol is used to extract the oil. When the alcohol evaporates, the oil is left behind.

This is not considered the best method for extraction as the solvents can leave a small amount of residue behind which could cause allergies and effect the immune system.

    Solvent Extraction:

Only recently developed, this method uses Carbon Dioxide to extract the essential oil from the plant when liquefied under pressure.

Once the liquid depressurizes, the carbon dioxide returns to a gaseous state, and only pure essential oil remains.

What is the process of extracting oil from a plant?

please i really need it in detail.

and i need the easiest way of oil extraction.

also i need a list of the things need things

i really appreciate those who will help me outWhat is the process of extracting oil from a plant?
    Things You鈥檒l Need:

    Herbs/plants

    Bowl

    Oil

    Strainer

    Cheesecloth

    Still

    Burner

Step1Use the maceration method of extracting oil from plants. This is the easiest method of extracting oil from plants. This is mainly for an aromatherapy benefit. Soak the plant matter in vegetable oil, heat up the oil for a few minutes (not boiling, just heated on medium high).

Step2Let the oil cool for a bit (don't let it get cold) and strain the mixture to separate the plant material from the oil. You have now created a plant infused oil that is ideal for massage purposes.

Step3Expression is also known as cold pressing. This is a great process for things like citrus oils.

Step4Remove the rind from the citrus fruit you'd like to press--such as orange, lemon or grapefruit.

Step5Chop or grind the rind of the citrus fruit.

Step6Press the rind mixture through a strainer or cheesecloth and catch the juice in a bowl. The product you get will be a watery blend of liquid and essential oil, which tends to separate over time. This product has a short shelf life (six months), so make only what you will use in that time frame.

Step7Steam distillation is another relatively easy way to extract oil from plants. To do this, you must have a still (this is similar to a pressure cooker). You can purchase or make your own still, but these directions assume that you already have one.

Step8Place the plant material in the still. Add water to the still. Heat the water slowly.

Step9The heat will create pressurized steam in the still. As the pressurized steam passes through the plant material, the oil in the plant is vaporized. The oil vapor passes out of the top of the still through a coil where the oil vapors condense back to liquids in a collection chamber. The oil separates from the water and floats to the top of the mixture.

Step10Skim the oil off of the water and you now have extracted oil from a plant for whatever use you'd like. What is the process of extracting oil from a plant?

What happens if leaves of a green plant are coated with oil?

It is like closing our nose and mouth tigtly. The leaves are important organ of the plant which synthsize the food for the plant. For this vital process easy gaseous exhnage is required which is done through the stomata present on the leaf surface. These are the tiny pores and if they get blocked by oily layer then the leaf is sure to die. What happens if leaves of a green plant are coated with oil?
If leaves of the green plant are coated with oil, respiratory system will be blocked. It will tun pale after sometime.Plant will die.

It is just like taking poison.

So, never put oil at the green leaves.

It's better to clean with fresh water. What happens if leaves of a green plant are coated with oil?
They con not produce their starch, the food for the plant nor breathe thro .Photo-synthesis will not happen as they can not reach the carbon dioxide in air. Subsequently the leaves will turn yellow and the plant will die.
The openings in the leaves - the stomata will be blocked and so gas exchange will be prevented. As a result no CO2 will be available for photosynthesis and the plant will eventually die.
1.there will be no exchange of gases.

    2.transpiration will not take place.

    3.stomata will get sunken.
    It will die
it will turn pale as stops breathing

How to optimize a oil and gas plant?

I have been in the petroleum business for 35 years, I have never heard of and oil and gas plant. Can you provide a definition or a description of what this facility does?

Then was is the basis for optimization? Cost? revenue? product recovery? How to optimize a oil and gas plant?
Build it with the following guidelines in mind:

    1. The layout of the plant should logically follow the different steps in refining and distilling the different oil and gas products. This will ease troubleshooting in case of problems later on.

    2. Lots of safety measures built into each process especially where people will be operating the machinery.

    3. Location far away from any population areas in case of accidents yet close to major transportation hubs such as railroads, highways or harbors. Also, locate it in a state which is friendly to oil and gas plants.

    4. Hire the best crew you can and train them extensively and constantly in safety measures.

What is a barometric condenser in an edible oil refinery plant for?

When you have condensable gases in the product and you don't want to waste them in a process where you have to maintain negative pressures (for example distillation), you should condense the gases and recollect them.

There are two options for this. First one is the barometric condenser and the second one is condenser(either tube and shell or surface etc.) with a vacuum pump.

Where you have sufficient height of the building, the process connection from the vessel to the vacuum pump is connected with a condnser whose height should minimum be equal to the liquid column height at perfect vacuum. The bottom of the condenser is immersed in a liquid bath. As the vacuum holds the liquid column, the extra fluid flows into the liquid bath and then is collected as overflow.

Barometric condensers are generally used with steam jet ejectors with a barometric leg of above 10 meters. What is a barometric condenser in an edible oil refinery plant for?
that's a pretty tough question to ask.

  • What is seal oil used for in a power plant, and where are seal oil coolers located?

is seal oil used in the turbine or generator or both?...is there a website where I can find pictures of all of this, particularly seal oil coolers?

thanks for your help! What is seal oil used for in a power plant, and where are seal oil coolers located?
Seal oil it typically used on rotating equipment to provide the lubricant and final sealing medium for the mechanical seals on the shafts of turbines and compressors.

The coolers are usually simple shell and tube exchangers with seal oil on the shell side and cooling water on the tube side. In some circumstances, you might have an air cooled exchanger similar but not exactly like a car radiator .What is seal oil used for in a power plant, and where are seal oil coolers located?
Seal oil forms a seal between smooth metal surfaces in machinery like your car engine. I'm enclosing a link so you can look at the file and get some idea of some types of seals and where the seal oil is. Seal oil doesn't come from sea mammals! Its just a certain thickness (viscosity) and refinement of oil best suited for this purpose.

Would reviving the nuclear reactor plant in Bataan help solve oil problem in the country?

Is it the solution to meeting the country's energy demands and decreasing dependence on imported oil? Your opinions, please.Would reviving the nuclear reactor plant in Bataan help solve oil problem in the country?
for me this is the right option to have efficient power source in the country. i don't know why? we have plenty of talented mechanical and electrical engineers who are capable to study/research regarding that matter particularly those working in NAPOCOR.

As i said last few days ago here in YAP that 1kg uranium is equevalent 20 million tons of coal that use us in NAPOCOR as fuel to produce electricity and the polution produced by fueling coal is enormous compare to uranium.

Some environmentalest disagree about using the nuclear power in the country coz they are worred to have radiation leakage from the waste of it. but as i learned the waste of nuclear power plant will be disposed to several meters under the ground with sealed thick glass container. so, it is very safe. the possibity of victim 8 people in every 5,000 people while the victim of cancer at the recent survey of WHO are 80 in every 400 people.Would reviving the nuclear reactor plant in Bataan help solve oil problem in the country?
Somehow it can replenish the energy requirements of the country. But diminishing the dependence of imported crude oil, that is another story. The energy department has no concrete plan about the energy needs of the country, as long as their is an investor to put-up a power plant they usually have a go signal, only the local residents that opposed to it (especially when they set-up near the residential area). They (the energy department) could hardly address the LPG requirement of the country, what more for the nuclear plant? Provided that the nuclear plant would be revived, will the price of electricity go down as we decreased our consumption of crude oil?
Tempting to just turn it on to solve our money problem right?

But then, if something goes wrong (and in the Pinas setting -wherein facilities are often poorly maintained ) - this could turn into a catastrophe which could expose many filipinos to radiation, killing them instantly or after a long agonizing time with cancer and other radiation sickness, and worst, render many parts of Luzon unlivable for 2,000 years, and will also make Metro Manila polluted with nuclear contaminants, ensuring that many of us will get sick or mutate within years of the accident.

It's not like: ay mali, then the usual finger pointing and exposes about corruptions which resulted from the usual suspects in the government buying substandard materials in exchange for big kickbacks, then everybody forget what happens after awhile...And nobody goes to jail. Nuclear contamination is a serious, irreversible tragedy.
Yes, it will be of great help to our country. But I'm a bit afraid of it (remember the Chernobyl?), the plant will be full of radioactive materials. Plus, environmentalists will not agree on that as well as the local residents.
Anything would be better than continuing to shovel cash into the pockets of the wealthiest bigots in the world. All those elaborate castles in the desert are built with your money. The same people who consider the rest of the world as animals to be slaughtered at their own liking. I say let them park those Mercedez Benz and learn to ride a camel again. Let them eat sand for a while and see if they can produce their own food. One day their oil will be worthless. Then lets see how much they are willing to pay for rice, corn, wheat, etc.
well, if it doesnt pose any potential hazards (considering that the plant is built near major earthquake fault lines and a volcano)..and if the costs of updating its technical components would not be so ridiculously impractical..

    ...then why not.
it may only reduce the country's oil consumption by cutting down on the use on generating electricity but not on transportation and other stuff.

as the local singing trio, Apo Hiking Society said:

there's NO CLEAR PLAN for the NUCLEAR PLANT! hehehe
I don't care if it would or won't anymore, I want to get my money's worth from it. (As long as it doesn't kill people).

-The nuke plant is no longer a ';white elephant';, we need it now!
yes, it will also give ';power'; to the country, but you have to sacrifice the natural wonders...
    Yes, as well as electricity.

Will synthetic oil made from decaying plant matter add net CO2 into the atmosphere?

A scientist named J.C. Bell has discovered a way to make bacteria turn decaying plant matter into synthetic oil. Will this add to net carbon release into the atmosphere or will this matter have released an equal amount of CO2 as it decayed anyway? Will synthetic oil made from decaying plant matter add net CO2 into the atmosphere?
    No.

The simplest reason is that this carbon was removed from the atmosphere by plants a short time ago. Putting it back is no big deal.

The problem is digging up stuff the natural carbon cycle buried over a very long time, a long time ago, and burning it real fast. Will synthetic oil made from decaying plant matter add net CO2 into the atmosphere?
No. Actually, we have known how to do this for quite some time (at least 60 years). The problem is always cost.
Plants absorb CO2 and give off oxygen. Any action we take to speed up the release of CO2 by destroying plant life or its remnants increases CO2 above the natural level. If in converting decaying plant matter to oil and burning the oil we are faster than it would naturally occur, we are increasing the CO2 in the air. The main source of unnatural level of CO2 in the air is the consumption of oil, gas and coal(which were all plant and animal life at one time). This release of CO2 is above the natural level.
If a well engineered process to make oil from biomass a net decline in CO2 levels can be achieved. The old ways are not well engineered processes so they need to be replaced. The reason CO2 levels can be reduced by making oil from biomass should be clear to anyone that does a little research on the process. Its because more CO2 is used by plants and less CO2 is emited by human activity when you get it right. It is really very simple afterall.
While the process itself would be carbon neutral the blending and shipping of the resulting fuel takes energy and that in most cases would add to the world carbon balance.
Real oil is made from decayed plant matter. What's the difference?

How many billions of acres will it take to supply the world's needs?
it will release as much CO2 into the atmosphere when it is burnt as was taken out of the atmosphere by the plants. there may be some more CO2 released because of processing but other then that it should be carbon neutral.

Can pine oil be used as a fertilizer for plants? pls name a few more plant oils that can be used as fertilizer

Pine oil will kill plants. All oil will coat the plants and stop the intake of CO2 and release of O2 through the leaves. A necessary process for a plant to photosynthesize and make sugar to feed the plant.

Same with fats and lards. Do not put them on the plants.

Best fertilizers contain nitrogen, phosphorous and Potassium in the form of Pot Ash. pine oil is about the same as turpentine so it will kill plants. Ranger is wrong about all oils however. there are some made to spray on plants/trees to kill insects and in some cases an oil is sprayed on to slow water loss from a plant. It do sent stop it but does slow it down.

If 5 mL each of fish oil is given to flowering plants, would the plants' growth increase or would their luminosity increase (brightness)? How does fish oil affect plant growth?
It seems you are treating plants like human beings .

You cannot spoon feed any thing to plants as you would give it to a human!

How will you administer fish oil ( may be shark , cod or for that matter any fish ) to the plant ? Are you going to give it once or repeat the dosage ?

Are you going to inject it ?

Then you will be able to kill the plant rather quickly

If you put it in the soil around the plant ; then the same effect is observed but will take a bit more time .

Forget about the plants' growth increase or their luminosity increase (brightness).

Plants are not animals . Their requirements are different .

Even amongst the animals ; the food requirement are different .

Animals ( including humans ) require iron ( Fe ) for formation of hemoglobin in blood .

But that does not mean that one can force a few grams of raw iron compound ( like ferric or ferrous sulphate)down their gullet !!!!!

It will have disastrous effect .

One must have knowledge of the metabolic activities of any organism before one can tinker with their nutrition .

No matter how hungry is a tiger , it will not eat grass ( It is full of essential nutrients that are useful to tiger ) . this is because tiger does not have metabolic machinery to handle it .

    Now some advice=

1 ) If your main intention is to try out fish oil on your plants then do not do it .

2 ) If your main intention is the health and welbeing of your plants ,then-

i ) loosen the soil around your plants to improve aeration and to drain off the surplus water that accumulates from time to time .

ii ) After loosening the soil give some organic manure or organic fertilizer by sprinkling it around the plants .

iii ) Ensure that the plants receive full sunlight , so that they will grow and produce flowers to their full genetic capacity .

Since the plant names are not mentioned . I have quoted general rules of the thumb above in i , ii and iii.

    Thank you !

Is there an easy way to distill essential oil from plant leaves, particularly patchouli?

I'm looking for an easy way to draw the patchouli oils from the leaves of a patchouli plant, at home. Any ideas out there? And is there a difference in the stuff you buy vs. making your own?Is there an easy way to distill essential oil from plant leaves, particularly patchouli?
Have you seen how doctors sometimes have small grinding bowls to palvize medicine? Perhaps a process like that would work.

Take a plastic pail and put the leaves in it. Take a large wooden stick with a rounded end and mash the leaves into a paste.

...I geuss the next step would be to compress that paste, so all the oil is squeezed out. This way reminds me of a simular process people use to make apple cyder. They squeeze the juice out of the apples with a giant compressor.

Idea #2. Take the leaves and make a Tea. Boil the leaves in Water for awhile. Let the whole thing boil down until the oil is only left.

Anyway, hope this gives you some ideas.

It is posible that store bought patchouli oil may contain chemicals. It is common for commerically grown plants to be spreyed with pesticide and artifical fertilers. Those chemicals would be greatly obsorbed into the plants/oil.

If you grow your own Patchouli Plants, you have the ability to choose what happens to them. Personally, I like nature fertilizers and companion planting. If you grow naturally, your plants/oil won't contain chemicals. That's the difference. Is there an easy way to distill essential oil from plant leaves, particularly patchouli?

Can I use ordinary plant oil, - like olive oil, to protect lithium from rapid oxidation?

I think it would :/ need some confirmationCan I use ordinary plant oil, - like olive oil, to protect lithium from rapid oxidation?
It is unwise. Vegetable oils are esters of fatty acids with glycerol. The lithium metal could react with ester linkages by reducing them. Not only would this consume lithium, but it might develop enough heat to become dangerous.

Mineral oils are long-chain saturated hydrocarbons that are inert to lithium. Can I use ordinary plant oil, - like olive oil, to protect lithium from rapid oxidation?
Probably, all I think you need is for it not to be soluble in air or water to prevent oxidation. In which case any oil without detergents work.

Death...plants can't use oil as a medium through which their roots can obtain nutrients. They need water and it's awesomeness. Depending on the plant, it'll still germinate though due to the food imparted on it from the parent organism (grow the first two or three leaves then die).

Can the Castor oil plant make you high?

I heard that with the right preparations you can use it as a easy drug, and sometimes it can be toxic. what is the right use?Can the Castor oil plant make you high?
Nope haven't heard that. There is a castor relative that has been thought to be a catalyst in mescal.

Castor beans (not the oil) are not to be messed with as they are extremely toxic:

Although castor and jequirity beans are an uncommon cause of poisoning, they remain a concern because their toxins are among the most lethal naturally occurring toxins known today. The beans most commonly are used for ornamental purposes, such as prayer or rosary beads, or in musical shakers (maracas).

The castor bean plant (Ricinus communis) is found primarily in Asia and Africa, but the plant has taken root in all temperate and subtropical regions around the world. In fact, the castor bean plant grows in the southwest United States mainly along streams and riverbeds. Castor beans are oblong and brown in color with speckled dark brown spots.

Jequirity bean plant (Abrus precatorius) is primarily found in southeast Asia, but has spread to subtropical regions. The jequirity bean has a shiny appearance and is mainly red in color with a black spot.

For centuries, ricin and abrin, the toxin contained in the seeds of the castor and jequirity beans, respectively, have been used for homicidal purposes. The ease of production of ricin makes it very attractive as an agent that could be used by a terrorist or other criminal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) categorizes ricin as a category B agent because it is moderately easy to disseminate while causing moderate-to-high morbidity in humans.

During the 1980s, the Iraqi government made weapon-grade ricin, and it was tested on animals and in artillery shells. In 2003, ricin was found in US Senator Bill Frist's office, and, in January of that same year, Arabs connected to Al-Qaeda were arrested in a London apartment while trying to manufacture ricin.1 In February 2008, a man was poisoned in a hotel room in Las Vegas, Nevada. Because of the ongoing threat of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the United States, physicians must become familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of poisonings due to substances such as ricin.

    Pathophysiology

These beans contain potent toxalbumins that inhibit protein synthesis and cause severe cytotoxic effects on multiple organ systems. Castor beans contain the toxalbumin ricin, and jequirity beans contain abrin. The toxins are present in all parts of the plant but are most concentrated in the beans or seeds. Symptoms include delayed gastroenteritis, which may be severe and hemorrhagic, followed by delirium, seizures, coma, and death. The beans are covered by a hard, relatively impervious outer shell that must be chewed or broken in some way in order for the toxalbumin to be released and, thus, present a toxic hazard. Castor beans are particularly antigenic and may cause severe cutaneous hypersensitivity and systemic reactions.

    Frequency

    United States

Jequirity and castor bean ingestions are extremely uncommon. The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) recorded 168 cases of toxalbumin cases.2 Of those 156 were single exposures, 53 of which were treated in a health care facility. No deaths were reported and only one was considered to have a major adverse reaction.

    Mortality/Morbidity

Fatalities have occasionally been reported following ingestion of chewed castor beans. Chewing and swallowing as little as 1 bean may produce death in a child; however, swallowing an intact bean without chewing is unlikely to cause serious sequelae. Jequirity bean mortality is 5% for ingestion, and death may occur as long as 14 days after poisoning. Can the Castor oil plant make you high?

No there are others. I think each region of the country should pick a plant the grows best in that area and make oil from that. In New England area it's algae, canola, and prairie grass. These can grow in summer and winter. I think algae is the most possible due to the amount that can be made.

It's true that the beans are highly toxic (it only takes about 8 of them to kill an adult). But, the leaves are not toxic. Only the immature pods and mature seeds. Many gardeners grow castors but choose to cut off the pods for safety reasons as soon as the plant starts to flower and produce seeds. It's your call, but if you want to keep the plants, I would keep them but just take reasonable precautions. Of course, you can never be too careful, and it depends on lots of factors (do you have time to always cut off the flowers and dispose of them? How likely are your children to eat the pods? etc.)Caster oil plant- should i get rid of it?
There are two plants called castor oil plants.

Ricinus communis this plant is poisonous.

Fatsia japonica this plant is not.

Check which you have before you throw them.
It is a very handsome plant when young but gets straggly and untidy when older. I'd grow from seed every year and use the plants for dotting around the garden. That way they may never get mature nough to bear the poisonous seeds.

Or is it just like mascara? As in, once you wash it off, your eyelashes are short again? Or does it actually make the eyelashes fuller and longer permanently?Does castor plant oil really make eyelashes grow longer?
Yes it does work. Vegtable oil and Vaseline also make them longer.

The results are not immediate though. You have to apply it every night and wait for the results to appear!!! :)Does castor plant oil really make eyelashes grow longer?
    yes..I have tried it myself.
