Can one get the essential oil from a plant at home without any harmful chemicals?
Yes from some of the plant materials in small quantities.

I am not able to guess in which part of the globe you are and what plant materials are around you and in your kitchen which are capable of giving essential oil readily.

Steam distillation is the most common procedure. At home without any special equipment you may be able to get some oil from rose petals (do not use hybrid varieties), cloves, fennel seeds, sweet lime (use peels), eculyptus leaves, ginger, etc. DONOT CARRY ON WITHOUT SUPEVISION OF AN EXPERT.

Take any of the above. If it is solid then powder it, if it is wet then grind it to make paste or gring it in a grinder. Add 3 to 4 times water. Put it in pressure cooker. Do not put ant weight on the cooker. Attach a rubber pipe to the steam outlet. Pu the other end of pipe in a bottle. Heat to boil and let the condense steam into bottle. The water in bottle will contain essential oil. Oil will separate out if content is faorly high otherwise it will remain dissolved in water. But you will be able to smell it and appriciate the smell.

Some part of the rubber pipe can be replaced by metal pipe to make cooling more effective.

Several crude innovative devices can be tried.

By Cold pressing:

From orange peels, jasmine flowers, mint leaves, lemon leaves, lemon peels the following method can be tried.

Take a few filter paper ( or pices of newspaper/ butter paper / fine cloth).

Keep two / three papers one over another then spread small quantity of the above material, then place more papers over it. Press again and again with a roller pin a few times. Remove paper one by one. Some of the papers will have some oil enough to be able to smell the oil.
