They could not breathe in that CO2 could not enter the stomates of the leaves and O2 could not leave. This would result in the plant's death because it could not carry out photosynthesis.What would happen to a plant if its leaves were completely coated with petroleum jelly or oil?
Complete coverage would seal off the stomates on the bottom of the leaf preventing gas exchange so the leaf would eventually wilt and die.
